As the winter months approach, many people find themselves dreading the cold and dark days ahead. Frigid temperatures, darkness before work is done, snow and ice storms, and travel delays make winter many people’s least favourite season.
For some, winter brings the added challenge of Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), a type of depression that affects people in Northern climates (especially women) during the fall and winter months. With symptoms ranging from a persistently sad mood to withdrawal from social interactions, it’s no wonder that winter can feel draining.
But winter doesn’t have to be a season of despair.
Drawing inspiration from cultures that embrace the colder months—like Norway, where they have a term called “koselig” to describe the coziness of winter—we can shift our perspective and find a way to make the best of the winter season.
So here are ten tips to help you not just survive, but truly thrive this winter!
10 tips for enjoying winter

- Seek sunshine
Combat the effects of limited daylight by bundling up and heading outside. Even on cold days, a brisk walk can boost your mood. Consider investing in a sun lamp as well…it’s an effective first line of treatment for SAD.
-
- Take supplements
Vitamin D is crucial during winter, especially if you live in a northern climate. Many Canadians have insufficient levels, so consult with your doctor about taking a Vitamin D supplement. Adding fish oil and a multivitamin can also support your immune system.
-
- Embrace stillness
Winter is a natural time for reflection and slowing down. Carve out moments to meditate or simply enjoy the quiet. Allow yourself to connect with your breath and appreciate the serenity that comes with this season.
-
- Find inspiration
Use the extra time indoors to consume inspiring content. Dive into uplifting podcasts, read motivational books, or explore new music and movies. Surrounding yourself with positivity can uplift your spirits.
-
- Get moving
Exercise is a powerful mood booster. It releases endorphins and helps alleviate feelings of stress and anxiety. Aim for at least 15 minutes of physical activity each day. Whether it’s yoga, a home workout, or a walk in the snow, keep your body moving.
-
- Start projects
Winter is the perfect time to tackle home projects. Whether it’s decluttering, redecorating, or starting a DIY project, use this time to enhance your living space. A fresh environment can lift your mood!
-
- Make time for play
Create a winter bucket list. Think of activities unique to this season: skiing, snowshoeing, or building snowmen. Incorporate fun into your routine with comedy shows, board games, or holiday light walks.
-
- Foster creativity
Engage your creative side this winter. Whether it’s painting, cooking new recipes, or journaling, find activities that capture your imagination. Taking a class or trying something new can provide a refreshing focus away from negative thoughts. Other activities to try include painting rocks, doing origami, trying diamond dotting or cross stitching, making a scrapbook, attending a paint night.
-
- Create comfort
Make your living space cozy. Embrace the warmth of soft blankets, hot beverages, fluffy socks, scented candles, and twinkling lights. Create a sanctuary where you can relax and enjoy the beauty of winter from the comfort of your home!
-
- Connect with Community
Social connections are vital, especially in winter. Join a Meetup group, schedule regular outings with friends, or engage in community activities. Volunteering can also foster connections and provide a sense of purpose. Remember, isolation can exacerbate feelings of sadness, so reach out and remain connected.
